A NEWSLETTER FOR SERVICE-BASED SOLOS

Hi Reader,

Welcome to the latest edition of The Hub Newsletter!

In each edition, I share helpful tips and ideas about how you can grow an email-first solo biz by using what's been proven to work for others, just like you.

Okay, so let's get into this week's edition...

Improve your email marketing...

When writing your emails, are you talking to just one person?

Who do you think about when writing your emails?

I find it makes such a difference to focus on an individual when I'm writing because it puts me squarely in the zone for crafting my messages.

Every email I write is for Janice.

Janice is NOT some fictitious character I've manifested for the purpose of having an avatar - she's real and is my perfect customer.

Why is she my perfect customer?

  • She arrived with problems I know I could fix for her.
  • She engaged with my content.
  • She understood how I worked, and it flowed with her way of working.
  • I could empathise with her struggles (I had them years ago).
  • She was willing to consider new ideas.
  • She asks the questions I'm most comfortable answering (in my wheelhouse)
  • She bought the right products/services at the right time to help her succeed.
  • ...+ more

In short, she 'gets' me and I 'get' her.

And that's why, whenever I create content in my business, for marketing purposes, or products and services to sell - I do it for Janice.

I regularly ask myself...

  • What would Janice find helpful?
  • How would Janice like to consume this content?
  • Would Janice understand this?
  • What delivery platform would Janice prefer?
  • What questions would Janice have about this?
  • ...etc.

Adopting this approach was a game-changer for me - I now feel I have my personal sounding board that sits alongside me as I craft my content.

Introducing a Kit feature...

Create a paid newsletter for your most engaged subscribers

Do you have content to share with your audience that they'd be prepared to pay for? If so, I have good news - you can do it easily using Kit.

Step 1 of 3

Create your paid newsletter

Firstly, give it a title - people connect more readily when they have something to hook onto. Let's work through this using a fictitious example - The 30-Minute Chef - a monthly email newsletter subscription, charged at $20/m.

The content in the paid newsletter, 'The 30-Minute Chef', is all about making delicious and healthy food in 30 minutes or less.

Each month, there's an edition that gives content covering the following;

  • New recipes for 4 x breakfasts, 4 x lunches, and 4 x dinners.
  • Tips on what to include in your meals to aid good general health.
  • An interview with a guest chef.
  • A video tutorial for 1 meal preparation.
  • An invitation to send questions and receive replies.

Okay, so now we know what we're selling - a monthly newsletter. The creation of that newsletter can be done using any platform you wish; however, here's the easiest way;

  1. Create your recipes, including images, using Canva.
  2. Record your interview as an audio or video file and embed it in your email.
  3. Record your video tutorial using an overhead camera.
  4. Write the newsletter edition using Kit's email editor and make it aesthetically pleasing using white space, text decoration, and images.

Step 2 of 3

Sell your newsletter subscription

Inside Kit, navigate to the menu option 'Earn' > 'Products' to create your new newsletter subscription.

Once on the 'Products' page, configure your newsletter using the set-up feature and select a newsletter subscription.

Once you've completed the set up of the 'Product', you'll now have a published landing page to use as your sales page where subscribers can join.

Step 3 of 3

Share your newsletter subscription with customers

Once you've created your 'Product' and are crafting regular monthly newsletter editions, you need to share them with those who subscribed to the $20/m fee.

It's easy to do.

Just as you do with every other email broadcast you send, sharing your paid email is done in exactly the same way - albeit by applying a filter to your sender list.

Once it's ready to send, click on the 'Continue' button (little black button on bottom-right corner) and select 'Subscribed to' > 'Products', and choose your newsletter from your drop-down menu.

With the filter selected, hit the 'Send' button (or schedule in advance) and share your newsletter edition.

By using this filter, you'll automatically only send it to subscribers who have a valid subscription to your newsletter - if they unsubscribe at any point, Kit will exclude them from future editions.

Tech you might find helpful...

Video Speed Controller

I don't know about you, but I hate when I watch a video and there are no speed controls (normally because the creator has disabled the options) - I like to watch videos at 1.5 speed, especially when it's a slow speaker.

This little web browser extension gets me around this problem, making it easy to speed up, slow down, rewind, or fast-forward - all using keystrokes.

I'll be honest, I only ever use the key 'D' (increase speed) until the speed is just right for the videos; however, there are several options;

  • S - decrease playback speed.
  • D - increase playback speed.
  • R - reset playback speed to 1.0x.
  • Z - rewind video by 10 seconds.
  • X - advance video by 10 seconds.
  • G - toggle between the current and user-configurable preferred speed.
  • V - show/hide the controller.
  • M - set a marker at the current playback position.
  • J - jump back to the previously set marker.

I'm currently enjoying some family time with my wife, daughters, and granddaughters in the beautiful Canary Islands ☀️ - but I'll be back behind the laptop by the middle of next week!

Whatever you're up to this weekend, I hope you enjoy! 😊
